Join us for a free Piano Master Class! High school pianists are invited to participate and receive expert coaching from two distinguished artists and educators. This is a wonderful opportunity for students considering studying piano in college to gain valuable performance and feedback experience. We can accommodate 4–6 participating students, so sign up early to reserve your spot! When registering, please include the pieces you’re currently working on. Up to 40 audience members of all ages are welcome to attend and observe.

Jung-Won Shin

Jung-Won Shin is a distinguished solo and collaborative pianist, piano pedagogue, and clinician, whose performances, presentations, and master classes span the United States, Canada, Europe, and Korea. She has been a prizewinner and finalist in numerous solo, concerto, and chamber music competitions. 

Shin has been featured at international and regional conferences of the College Music Society, the New Music on the Bayou Festival, the Music by Women Festival, the Lives of the Piano concerts at the Manhattan School of Music, the Beethoven Sonata Recital Series at Yamaha Artist Services in New York, the MTNA TEMPO Virtual Conference, the Rising Stars Concerts at the Orford Music Academy and Festival in Canada, and the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Austria. Her collaborative recordings, Chansons de la Nuit and Franck and Fauré Violin Sonatas, highlight her expressive artistry and stylistic versatility.

Shin co-founded The Art of the Piano festival and launched The Art of the Piano FOR TEACHERS at Delta State University, where she taught for many years. She has taught at the Summer Piano Camp and Keyboard Festival at Sungkyul University in Korea and has adjudicated the MTNA State Competitions, the MSO Emerging Artist Competition, the Memphis International Piano Competition, and numerous other solo, chamber, and concerto competitions.

A Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) and active member of MTNA, the Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico (PMTNM), and the Mississippi Music Teachers Association (MMTA), Shin has served as MMTA President, President-Elect, and in other leadership roles. She holds degrees in piano performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (D.M.A.), Indiana University (M.M.), and Seoul National University (B.M.). Recipient of Delta State University’s 2023 S. E. Kossman Outstanding Teacher Award, she is currently Assistant Professor of Piano and Coordinator of the Piano Area at New Mexico State University.

Yoshiko Arahata

Praised for “possess[ing] an exacting facility at the keyboard, playing with a vibrancy not often heard” (Rochester CITY Newspaper), Yamaha Artist Yoshiko Arahata is a versatile pianist, improvisor, composer, and educator. Grounded in solo and collaborative music, her artistic practice blends classical music with jazz and contemporary genres, dance, theater, and visual arts. Arahata was named a fellow of the prestigious Gilmore International Piano Festival and has performed across the US, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Her diverse concerto appearances span traditional works by Bach and Beethoven to contemporary ensembles featuring piano by Wolfgang Rihm, György Ligeti, and Steve Reich.  

A sought-after collaborative and chamber musician, Arahata has collaborated with Charles Castleman, Robin Scott, Jerry Hou, Jessica Ann Best, principal musicians from Toronto, Pittsburgh, and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestras, and artists at Garth Newel Chamber Music Festival. Her work has been featured at prominent piano platforms, including Frances Clark Center Piano Inspires, International Keyboard Collaborative Arts Society, College Music Society, among many others. Her composition for Odyssea (2023), a 30-minute dance-on-film produced by Quicksilver Dance, was showcased at fringe festivals in Edinburgh, UK, New York, and New Zealand, winning awards at Toronto IndieFilmmakers Festival.

Arahata is an Assistant Professor at New Mexico State University, developing a brand-new collaborative piano curriculum. Previously, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Indiana University Bloomington and taught and performed throughout upstate New York at over five universities and community music schools. She founded “The Pianist’s Guide to Dance Accompaniment” at the Eastman School of Music, where she also received the Teaching Excellence award. Arahata serves on the Creative Music Making committee of the National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy and is active as a masterclass teacher, adjudicator, and lecturer. Arahata holds degrees in Piano Performance from Eastman School of Music (D.M.A., B.M.) and Northwestern University (M.M.)
